Abstract

The Black Sea, which has maintained its importance throughout the history, has been one of the most conflicted regions among the global powers during the post-Cold-War period. Russia’s isolationist policies between 1991 and 1993 were replaced by the policies which aimed at being influential in the old Soviet geography after 1993. This resulted in a complete change in Russia’s Black Sea policies. Rumania and Bulgaria’s memberships to the European Union and NATO, and the increasing Western influence in the region led Russia to develop more reactive policies.
