Abstract

Alphabet changes can be seen not merely as a shift in writing symbols within the societies where they occur, but as one of the most fundamental cultural transformation processes that influence the interpretation and construction of reality. The Alphabet Revolution carried out in the newly established Republic in 1928 was part of this social transformation by abandoning the Arabic alphabet, which had been in use for nearly a thousand years. This study focuses on the columns and pages published by the Vakit newspaper on the alphabet revolution and the newly established spelling rules. Starting on the first day of 1929, the newspaper published columns and pages titled “Let's Correct Our Spelling” and “People's Schools,” as well as lists containing the names, professions, and locations of readers learning the new alphabet to reward them. When examined within the framework of the triadic semiotics theory developed by Charles Sanders Peirce, considered the founder of American pragmatism, this radical revolution appears as a structural change that has taken place across all layers of the semiosis process. Peirce's semiotics examines the way a sign (representamen) represents an object and the effect this representation has on the mind of an interpreter (interpretant), revealing that linguistic and cultural signs are not merely static tools, but dynamic and evolving processes .
