Abstract

This study investigates the asymmetric effects of short- and long-term external debt, categorized by public and private sectors, on the BIST Banking Index in Türkiye over the period 1996–2024. Assuming that the impact of external debt with different maturities on the banking sector is nonlinear, the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model is employed. Initially, the stationarity of the series is tested using the ADF and KPSS tests, and the cointegration relationship is examined through the ARDL bounds testing approach. The findings indicate that the maturity structure of external debt generates statistically significant and asymmetric long-run effects on the BIST Banking Index. In particular, negative shocks in public sector short-term external debt exert downward pressure on the index, while positive shocks in private sector long-term debt appear to support the banking index. The results suggest that external borrowing strategies should be reconsidered with attention to the maturity profile of debt. This study offers valuable insights for policymakers and investors and emphasizes the necessity of incorporating asymmetric models when analyzing the sectoral impacts of external debt.
