Abstract

Holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) distribution range is among the least known oak species distribution ranges in Turkey. Besides military areas and national parks, the limited distribution areas of this species are almost exclusively found near residential areas, and sometimes in towns. The aim of the article is to make suggestions for the forestry practices of the General Directorate of Forestry by conducting investigations and evaluations on the decline of the species due to urbanization and human impact and newly identified distribution areas of the species. With this study, the current status of existing distribution areas was examined and new distribution areas in Izmir and Mugla were identified; however, the species were not found in some previous distribution areas in Mugla. The species mainly grows at a maximum distance of 3 km from the sea at altitudes of 0-300m in the Black Sea Region and 0-1120m in the Aegean Region, and has no preference regarding the type of main rock. Since the distribution areas of the species are under the threat of destruction, they must be protected and space for seed orchards and gene conservation areas should be saved in appropriate areas. For the preservation of this species, it will be most appropriate to consider this easily identifiable species on the level of species, rather than grouped under the oak genus, in the management plans of the General Directorate of Forestry, and implementations supporting the species should be performed in distribution areas.
