Abstract

In this study, the responses of three egg parasitoid Trichogramma species (Trichogramma brassicae, Trichogramma evanescens, and Trichogramma pintoi), which are widely used in biological control, to different temperature conditions were evaluated. The experiments were conducted at 25, 30, 35, and 40 °C, 60 ± 5% relative humidity, and a 16:8 (light:dark) photoperiod. Biological parameters such as longevity, developmental time, egg darkening time, female ratio, and total number of individuals were investigated. The results indicated that the parasitism rate was highest at 25 °C for all species and gradually decreased with increasing temperature. Particularly at 40 °C, significant performance losses were observed in all species, and this temperature was considered an upper thermal stress limit. Similarly, reductions were recorded in adult emergence rate and total number of individuals. While the female ratio decreased with increasing temperature, developmental time and egg darkening time were shortened. Among the species, T. pintoi exhibited a shorter egg darkening period. The responses of different Trichogramma species to varying temperatures, evaluated based on the given parameters, may be useful in selecting appropriate parasitoid species for release under different climatic conditions and in improving parasitoid performance. In conclusion, temperature increase has significant effects on the biological performance of Trichogramma species, and selecting the appropriate species is critical for the success of biological control under different climatic conditions.
