Abstract

Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, 1957 (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is an important predatory mite in the control of Tetranychus urticae Koch, 1836 (Acari: Tetranychidae). However, Phytoseiulus persimilis is negatively affected by pesticides used against phytophagous mites. Therefore, plant-based products that can be used in combination with predatory mites are gaining importance within the scope of integrated pest management. In this context, investigating the potential of using predatory mites together with essential oils against phytophagous mites is of great significance. In the present study, the toxic effects of pine, juniper, and laurel essential oils on the egg, nymph, and adult stages of Phytoseiulus persimilis, as well as their repellent effects on the nymph and adult stages, were determined. The leaf disc method was used in bioassay experiments. As a result, the highest toxic effect on the adult and nymph stages was observed with pine essential oil at a 12% concentration. Regarding repellent effects, laurel essential oil exhibited the highest activity with 45% against adults and 40% against nymphs. In conclusion, pine essential oil showed strong toxic effects, while laurel and juniper essential oils demonstrated stronger repellent effects. Therefore, it was concluded that all three essential oils should be used with caution when applied in combination with Phytoseiulus persimilis.
