Abstract

The present study aimed to adapt the Romantic Sympathetic Magic Scale. The scale assesses individual variations in the propensity to direct attachment towards inanimate objects connected to one's partner. It also establishes a theoretical framework linking this propensity to the notion of sympathetic magic, thereby providing a foundation for understanding the motivational and cognitive factors that influence this inclination. In adapting the scale to Turkish, the 5-item scale was translated into Turkish, back translated into English, and expert opinions on the items were obtained. The research was conducted with 450 participants (282 women, 168 men) who were involved in an existing romantic partnership or had past experiences with romantic relationships, selected using the convenience sampling method. The Romantic Intimacy Scale was administered to 50 individuals to assess the scale's criterion validity, resulting in Pearson correlation coefficient values of .84. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the unidimensional structure of the original scale, and reliability analysis showed an acceptable internal consistency coefficient. The group score averages of the upper and lower 27% for all items seem to differ significantly from each other. Based on these findings, the Turkish adaptation of the scale demonstrated an accepted level of validity and reliability. It is inferred that the Turkish version of the scale will contribute to further understanding of the connection among interpersonal relationships, emotional attachment, and inanimate objects, thereby clarifying emotional needs, attachment styles, and relationship dynamics and offering insights into coping with loneliness or stress in relationships.
