Abstract
The boundary of the research area is drawn by taking into consideration the site where settlements are concentrated in the northern part of Bingöl Plain and the development directions of these settlements are a problem. This area is rapidly consumed by residential areas on the plain agricultural land which is rare and precious. For this reason, it is very important to determine the appropriate areas for the spatial development of the settlements in the research area. In this study, the appropriateness of the geographical potential of the existing land for urban development was analyzed using Remote Sensing (UA) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies and AHP technique. According to the results of the suitablitiy analysis, 36.5% (66 km²) of the 181 km² research area is most suitable for the development of settlements, 35.9% (65 km²) is medium suitable for the development of settlements and 27.6% (50 km²) and 0.02 km² (0.01%) are not suitable for the development of settlements. If a correct spatial development plan is made in the research area, the most suitable areas for settlement will be able to meet the need of settlement expansion for the next 17 years.
