Abstract

Environmental problems such as drought, weakening of vegetation, land degradation and climate change, which have become serious problems in the world and in our country, have increased the importance of detecting the processes of desertification and combating desertification. In this study, it was aimed to calculate the desertification risk in Çankırı Urban Forest, which is approximately 8 km away from Çankırı city center, depending on soil and vegetation characteristics along with human-induced activities (recreational activities such as picnics, walking, etc.). Soil samples were taken from 30 random points in the study area, which is approximately 22 ha size, and desertification survey forms suitable for the relevant land use in the DIS4ME (Desertification Indicator System for Mediterranean Europe) system were filled in at the same sampling point. As a result of the calculations, the desertification risk in the area has taken values ranging from the lowest to 2.26 (low risk) and the highest to 5.14 (medium risk). Damage to vegetation, especially in picnic areas where human activities have increased, as well as deterioration in soil properties, have increased the sensitivity of the area to desertification. This situation shows the importance of taking necessary precautions against desertification, especially in the research area where the effects of the semi-arid climate type are felt greatly.
