Abstract

Background and aims This study was conducted in 2004 in Kurşunlu, Çankırı, in 10-20-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) plantations to determine the oviposition period of the Common Pine Sawfly [Diprion pini L. (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae)] and the importance of its natural enemies in Scots pine forests. Methods The study area was considered as a whole; the flight pattern of D. pini was monitored using the pheromone trap method, and the most appropriate time for control was suggested after examining the egg-laying pattern on infected needles, the relationships between the egg-laying pattern and natural enemies, larval stages, and the number of needles with pest eggs detected and their lengths separately. Results It was determined that the egg-laying period of D. pini lasts 2-3 weeks and its most effective natural enemy is the egg parasitoid Neochryocharis formosa (Westwood 1833) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). Approximately one week after first-instar larvae emerge from D. pini eggs, N. formosa adults emerge and remain active in nature for about 30 days. The flight pattern of D. pini population was monitored with pheromone traps, and egg surveys were carried out one week after the first adult was caught in the traps. Considering the biology of D. pini and N.formosa, the period when second-instar larvae reach approximately 50% of the population has been determined as suitable for control. The relationship between D. pini eggs on Scots pine shoots and needle length is moderate (r=0.5039). There is a linear relationship between the total length of infested needles and egg numbers, expressed as y=3.4968x+2.7045. Conclusions Accordingly, in terms of the oviposition preference of D. pini, needle length is not an important parameter for oviposition; it is understood that all eggs are laid on adjacent needles in the selected shoot.
