Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to analyze the Science curriculum for middle schools (grades 5-8) prepared within the scope of the Türkiye Century Maarif Model (TYMM) and implemented in 2024, within the framework of Haladyna’s Taxonomy, to reveal the cognitive level distribution and depth of the program. In the study, which used document analysis design from qualitative research methods, a total of 589 items were examined, including 143 learning outcomes in the program and 446 process components that contain the implementation steps of these outcomes. The data were coded according to the four cognitive levels of Haladyna’s Taxonomy (Understanding, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Creativity); additionally, the “Average Cognitive Depth Score (ACDS)” was calculated to compare the cognitive intensity of disciplines. The data were analyzed using the content analysis technique, and the results were descriptively presented in terms of frequency and percentage values. According to the research findings, the most dominant cognitive level in the overall curriculum is “Critical Thinking” with a rate of 49.6%, followed by “Problem Solving” with 22.7%. The analyses determined that critical thinking skills show a systematic increase from 5th to 8th grade, reaching their peak in 8th grade. The most striking finding of the study is that the “Understanding” level, which is quantitatively absent in the main learning outcomes (especially in 6th and 7th grades), continues to exist in process components at all grade levels, functioning as a necessary cognitive scaffolding for higher-level skills. When subject areas are examined, it was determined that Earth Sciences and Chemistry exhibit a stronger orientation toward critical thinking compared to Physics and Biology disciplines. In conclusion, it was determined that the TYMM Science curriculum exhibits a contemporary structure that focuses on developing students’ analysis, synthesis, and evaluation skills rather than traditional knowledge transfer; however, there is a need to increase the representation of the “Creativity” level, which remains at 13.6%.
