Abstract

This study aims to determine the asymmetric relationships between changes in country risk perception and digital consumption behaviors in Türkiye. For this purpose, the relationships between the weekly 5-year Türkiye’s CDS (Credit Default Swap) premium and the debit and credit card spending amounts of 15 sectors were analyzed using the Hatemi-J (2012) asymmetric causality test for the period of 7 March 2014-15 May 2026. The findings indicate that CDS premium changes are not reflected homogeneously in sectoral spending. Another important finding of the study is that most of the identified relationships stemmed from decreases in CDS premiums. It was found that decreases in CDS premium are related to increases in spending on vehicle, electronics, jewelry, fuel and food, while increases in CDS premium are related to decreases in spending on healthcare, health products, cosmetics and fuel. Also, it was determined that decreases in CDS premium are associated with decreases in insurance and private pension spending. The results indicate that CDS premiums can be used as a complementary indicator for policymakers and investors in monitoring sectoral demand.
