Abstract

This study presents a comparative computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of a Newtonian model and a modified Quemada-based aneurysm-sensitive non-Newtonian blood flow model in an idealized aortic aneurysm geometry. The proposed model dynamically updates blood viscosity as a function of local shear rate and vascular morphology, enabling a more realistic representation of the rheological complexity arising from shear-thinning behavior and erythrocyte aggregation within the aneurysm sac. Under physiological pulsatile flow conditions, the model yielded more consistent wall shear stress (WSS) distributions, a smoother spatial distribution of oscillatory shear index (OSI), and a marked reduction in regions of relative residence time (RRT). Compared with the classical Newtonian assumption, the new formulation suppressed non-physical recirculation and successfully captured the time-dependent behavior of viscosity throughout the cardiac cycle. Overall, while the Newtonian model qualitatively reproduced global flow trends, the aneurysm-sensitive non-Newtonian model more accurately quantified physiologically consistent hemodynamics within aneurysmal regions.
