Abstract

The Prayer rugs of the 16th and the17th centuries offer rich examples in terms of color, design, and technique during the Safavid Dynasty. Safevid era which has an important role in Iranian art is represented with ostentatious works of art and they reflect, in both architecture and small works of art, the wealth and power of the environment they were produced. Safevid emperors protected artists and played an important role in the development in their art. Tabriz became the center of Safevid art, especially after it became the capital city. The development in the relationship of Iran with foreigners in this era fostered the great support to activities of art; therefore, it led up to the appearance of ostentatious works. There are several reasons of the improvement in carpet art and the most important is the emperors’ interest in carpets. Thanks to great support of Shah İsmail, masters produced unique compositions; and accordingly, plant designs emerged. This article presents the historical development of some carpet praying rugs during the Safevid Dynasty and the design analyses of the praying rug samples.
