Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to reveal the clinical characteristics of consultations requested from the otorhinolaryngology department in a tertiary healthcare institution through a descriptive study. Materials and Methods: Consultations requested from the otorhinolaryngology department between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024, were included in the study. The consultations were categorized into four groups based on the requesting department: Emergency Medicine, Outpatient Clinics, Inpatient Wards, and Intensive Care Units. In addition, consultations were evaluated in terms of clinical characteristics and the most frequent reasons for requesting consultation. Descriptive data were analyzed with the SPSS 24.0 package program. Results: A total of 3355 consultations were requested from the otorhinolaryngology department during the specified period. Of these, 517 (15.40%) were requested by the emergency medicine department, 1618 (48.22%) by outpatient clinics, 1036 (30.87%) by inpatient wards, and 184 (5.48%) by intensive care units. The most common reasons for consultation were as follows: evaluation of foreign bodies in the otorhinolaryngology areas in the emergency medicine department; and assessment for upper respiratory tract infections in both outpatient clinics and inpatient wards; and tracheotomy procedures in intensive care units. Conclusion: The otorhinolaryngology department plays a crucial role in the preliminary diagnosis, diagnosis, and treatment processes of patients in collaboration with various medical departments. With the insights gained from this study, the Otorhinolaryngology Department at Süleyman Demirel University Research and Training Hospital has updated its practices and improved its current strategies to manage consultation processes more effectively.
