Abstract

Objective: Occupational health and safety is seen as a new work discipline in working life with the relevant regulations as a result of laws and regulations. In recent years, due to the increasing number of employment in workplaces, there is an increasing need for occupational health and safety practices. This research was conducted to determine the relationship between occupational safety awareness and safe behaviors of nurses. Material and Method: The sample of the study consisted of 242 nurses who agreed to participate in the research voluntarily. The data collected from the nurses by the questionnaire method were statistically analyzed in three parts; socio-demographic characteristics, occupational safety awareness scale and safe behavior scale. Findings: In the study, it was determined that there was a significant, high-level positive relationship between occupational safety awareness and safe behaviors of nurses (r=0.766, p<0.001). A high-level, positive and statistically significant relationship was determined between the Occupational Safety Awareness Scale and the Safety Compliance Sub-Dimension (r=0.653, p<0.001) and the Safety Participation Sub-Dimension (r=0.694, p<0.001). A highly positive and statistically significant relationship was found between the Safety Behavior Scale and the Safety Compliance Sub-Dimension (r=0.843, p<0.001) and the Safety Participation Sub-Dimension (r=0.913, p<0.001). Conclusion: From the obtained data, it was determined that as the job safety awareness of nurses increased, their safe behaviors also increased. Therefore, it is important to increase the job safety awareness of nurses in order to ensure the development of safe behaviors with safe working environments.
