Abstract
Onion is an important plant species in terms of both its economic value and human nutrition. One of the most important factors causing yield loss in onion is the stem and bulb nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci). Stem and bulb nematode, which has more than 500 hosts, is on the quarantine list in many countries. If the stem and bulb nematode infection occurs during the seed germination stage of the onion plant, it causes significant losses in cultivation from seed. In later plant development stages, symptoms are deformity, rotting and loss of yield in leaves and bulbs. Chemical methods used in nematode control are increasingly being replaced by environmentally friendly control methods due to the risks they pose to the environment. In this context, the importance of rotation practices is increasing. In this study, different rotation practices including wheat (Triticum aestivum), canola (Brassica napus L.), common vetch (Vicia sativa) and onion (Allium cepa) plants were applied for 3 years in a producer's field infested with stem and bulb nematode in Karaman Province. Onion planting was carried out in all parcels in the 4th year of the experiment. Nematode population density in the soil was monitored throughout the study. Plant parasitic, fungivorous, bacteriovorous and omnivorous nematodes were detected in the experiment area. The most common plant parasitic nematode species were; Ditylenchus dipsaci and Pratylenchus spp. In general, nematode populations were high in the first year of the trial. It decreased in the second and third years. In the fourth year, it remained high. Nematode populations increased throughout the year, from April to June, and then decreased. In the 4th year of the experiment, the initial populations of D. dipsaci did not differ among rotation treatments. However, lower nematode populations were obtained in wheat-canola-vetch (average 53.7 nematodes/100 g soil) and vetch-wheat-canola (average 60.5 nematodes/100 g soil) applications. Crop rotations including wheat, vetch and canola plants would contribute to the management of D. dipsaci.
