Abstract

In the present study, observations were made of the life histories, parasitoids and distribution of Malacosoma castrensis kirghisicum Staudinger, 1879 (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), feeding on sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop) on the campus of Atatürk University in Erzurum. Formed larvae hibernate within the eggshell, and the following spring they start to emerge from late April to early May. In natural conditions, the duration of larval development was about four weeks, and pupation two weeks. Caterpillars live in common webs and can cause damage seriously on leaves and tip of the host plant. Pupation occurs in a silky cocoon with yellowish powder on the food plants and under stones. Adults fly from June to the beginning of August and females begin laying eggs in a ring-like shape on the stems of plants 1–2 days after mating. In the natural conditions, 300-500 eggs occurred in one cluster. Besides the sainfoin, M. c. kirghisicum feeds on Astragallus spp., Euphorbia spp., Lotus spp., Trifolium spp., Artemisia spp., Geranium spp., and Sarcopoterium spinosum (L). Related to the natural enemies, Pimpla rufipes (Miller, 1759) and Gregopimpla malacosomae (Seyrig, 1927) (Hym: Ichneumonidae), Apanteles spurius Wesmael, 1837 (Hym: Braconidae), Pales pavida (Meigen, 1824), Masicera sphingivora (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830), Exorista larvarum (L., 1758), Drino inconspicua (Meigen, 1830), Echinomyia magnicornis Zett., 1844, Tachina praeceps Meigen, 1824, Exorista segregata (Rondani, 1859), Tachina praeceps Meigen, 1824 and Echinomyia praeceps rederi G. Tos. 1891 (Diptera: Tachinidae) are parasitoids that infest M. c. kirghisicum. In addition to M. c. kirghisicum currently, M. neustria (Linnaeus, 1758), M. franconica ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), and M. parallela (Staudinger, 1887) occur in Turkey. Among them, M. neustria is the most prevalent and destructive species in the country. Information on biology, parasitoids, host plants and distributions of these species were presented. In addition, investigations reveal that all previous reports of Malacosoma alpicola Stgr. or M. alpicola prima Stgr. in Türkiye are incorrect and actually refer to M. franconica. It is a mountain species that is exclusively found in Central Asia.

M. c. kirghisicum’un doğal düşmanları, Pimpla rufipes (Miller, 1759) ve Gregopimpla malacosomae (Seyrig, 1927) (Hym: Ichneumonidae), Apanteles spurius Wesmael, 1837 (Hym: Braconidae), Pales pavida (Meigen, 1824), Masicera sphingivora (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830), Exorista larvarum (L., 1758), Drino inconspicua (Meigen, 1830), Echinomyia magnicornis magnicornis Zett.
