Abstract

In this study, the effects of biologically enriched organomineral fertilizers (OMFs) on maize (Zea mays L.) yield and soil properties were investigated under field conditions, with the aim of evaluating sustainable fertilization approaches that could serve as alternatives to chemical fertilizers commonly used in crop production. Pelletized OMFs with a 6N-15P formulation, produced from composted farmyard manure and grass residues, were enriched with bacterial inoculation and applied at different rates (75 and 100 kg da⁻¹), and were compared with diammonium phosphate (DAP, 30 kg da⁻¹) and an unfertilized control, thereby attempting to elucidate the role of both organic and biological inputs in fertilizer effectiveness. Except for the unfertilized control, a total of 60 kg da⁻¹ urea was applied to all fertilizer treatments in two split applications, and therefore the results were evaluated not as conditions in which organomineral fertilizers solely replaced chemical fertilizers, but rather in terms of their comparative effects under mineral nitrogen supplementation. At the end of the experiment, organomineral fertilizer applications resulted in statistically significant increases in soil organic matter, available phosphorus, and extractable potassium compared with the control and chemical fertilizer treatments, and these increases were attributed to the acceleration of nutrient cycling driven by organic matter inputs together with enhanced microbial activity. Among the treatments, the application of 6N15P farmyard manure compost + bacteria at 100 kg da⁻¹ was the most effective, and this treatment produced more pronounced results in terms of both soil nutrient status and biological activity compared with the other applications. The highest total bacterial count (36.94 × 10⁸ cfu ml⁻¹) was observed in the high-dose bacterial farmyard manure compost treatment (AG2+), indicating that bacterial inoculation markedly increased the soil microbial population. With respect to plant parameters, green forage yield, dry matter yield, and plant height were determined as 8256 kg da⁻¹, 3279 kg da⁻¹, and 295 cm, respectively, and these values demonstrate that biologically enriched OMF applications positively supported maize growth and development. Overall, the results indicate that the AG2+ treatment (6N15P farmyard manure compost + bacteria, 100 kg da⁻¹) exerted beneficial effects on soil fertility, microbial activity, and maize yield. These findings demonstrate that biologically enriched OMFs, when applied under mineral fertilizer support, function as complementary inputs that contribute to soil organic matter, microbial activity, and nutrient cycling, rather than direct replacements for chemical fertilizers. Bacteria-enriched OMFs were found to enhance soil organic matter and carbon content, thereby supporting sustainable agricultural production and potentially contributing to the long-term conservation of soil health.
