Abstract
Councils have an important place in the shaping and institutionalization of the Christian credo. In the history of Christianity, various councils were organized in different time periods and in different places. The decisions taken in these councils caused conflicts and divisions among the groups. Therefore, these divisions accelerated the process of sectarianization, institutionalization in theological, political and socio-cultural terms, or in other words, statehood. The great schism of 1054 was considered by some as a disintegration and weakening in the history of Christianity, but by others as a strengthening in the context of independent and authoritative Apostolic churches. Since then, the Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant sects that emerged in the 15th century have adopted different approaches to the seven ecumenical councils and their decisions that took place in the Patristic period. According to the Catholics, this number consists of 21 ecumenical councils, while according to the Orthodox, it is limited to the first seven councils. However, the Syriac, Gregorian, Coptic and Abyssinian churches, known as the early eastern churches, adopted only the first four councils. The decisions taken formed seven councils under similar and different topics. When we examine the 7 councils, which are considered as the first period councils, it is seen that the Trinity, the evaluation and definition of the Virgin Mary on theological grounds and the iconoclasm movement are emphasized. In addition to theological issues, the implementation of religious rituals, the administration of central and local churches (duties of bishops) and areas of activity, etc. were discussed. In this study, each of the first seven councils will be analyzed separately and different and similar issues will be emphasized in terms of denominations. The decisions taken in the seven councils will be evaluated comparatively according to the largest denominations of Christianity, Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Protestantism.
