Abstract
This study examines the historical development of the rubber product manufacturing sector in Türkiye. The research analyzes how the production of the rubber plant, the industrialization process, and commercial activities were shaped within the framework of the statism policies adopted following the 1929 Great Depression. The study encompasses the establishment and developmental phases of the rubber sector from the 1930s onwards. In this context, the article addresses the initial industrial initiatives aimed at domestic production, agricultural experiments concerning rubber plant cultivation, research and development activities, the contributions of the Rubber Research Station established in 1943 to the sector, and the impacts of the liberal policies implemented after the 1950s on the rubber industry. The research is based on historical and descriptive analysis methods. Primary sources, notably the records of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Directorate of State Archives, and literature-based secondary sources were utilized in the study. The findings reveal that the rubber sector in Türkiye was founded upon state-led domestic production and research and development initiatives. It was determined that significant steps were taken toward the procurement of domestic raw materials during the 1940s and 1950s, while the influx of foreign capital and the proliferation of synthetic rubber production after the 1950s were instrumental in the rapid development of the sector. Consequently, it is concluded that the rubber sector in Türkiye transformed over time from a structure initially geared toward meeting domestic demand into a competitive industrial branch expanding into international markets. It is observed that state policies, research and development activities, and changes in capital structure played a determinant role in this transformation.
