Abstract
To meet daily nutrient and energy requirements of dogs for breed, age, physiological condition and activity with a balanced diet is essential to keep dog healthy. There are some differences in preferences of dog owners for choosing of dog food produced by commercial companies. The aim of the study was to find out some criteria of dog owners to make food choice for their dogs. The survey application of the study was performed by a total of 25 dog owners who applied to a private veterinary clinic in Samsun from January to June of 2016. In the study, 80% of dog owners noted to general content of dog food. In the study, the rate of dog owners who preferred to dog food with lamb, chicken and fish meat were 76, 12 and 12%, respectively. Only 56% of dog owners considered fiber content of the dog food. Fish oil was known as omega 3 fatty acid source by 88% of dog owners. Although, some dog owners (32%) did not prefer the dog food containing synthetic amino acids, 48% of them bought to the dog food with synthetic amino acids. In conclusion, dog owners are advised to pay attention to not only the general content of the food, but also the quantity, source and quality of all ingredients when choosing a dog food.

Dengeli bir diyetle, köpeğin ırkına, yaşına, fizyolojik durumuna ve aktivitesine göre günlük besin madde ve enerji ihtiyaçlarının yeterli düzeyde karşılanması sağlık açısından önem taşır. Bu amaçla ticari firmaların ürettikleri mamaların seçiminde köpek sahiplerinin tercihleri farklılıklar göstermektedir. Yapılan bu çalışmanın amacı, köpek sahipleri tarafından mama seçiminde göz önünde bulundurulan bazı kriterlerin belirlenmesidir. Araştırma anketi, 2016 yılı Ocak-Haziran ayları arasında Samsun’da faaliyet gösteren özel bir veteriner hekim muayenehanesine başvuran 25 köpek sahibinin katılımıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada, köpek sahiplerinin %80’inin köpek maması alırken mamanın genel içeriğine dikkat ettiği belirlenmiştir. Köpek sahiplerinin %76’sı kuzu etli mamayı tercih ederken, %12’si tavuk etli, %12’si de balık etli mamaları tercih etmiştir. Mamanın lif içeriğine dikkat eden köpek sahibi oranı %56’dır. Kullandıkları mamada omega 3 yağ asiti kaynağının balık yağı olduğunu belirten köpek sahiplerinin oranı %88’dir. Köpek sahiplerinin %48’inin içeriğinde sentetik amino asit bulunan mamaları alırken, %32’sinin bu mamaları tercih etmediği saptanmıştır. Sonuç olarak, köpek sahiplerinin mama seçerken mamanın genel içeriğinin yanı sıra tüm bileşenlerin miktar, kaynak ve kalitesine dikkat etmesi önerilmektedir.
