Abstract

Increases in the level of series compensation on the transmission line used to connect a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-based wind farm to the grid lead to the occurrence of subsynchronous resonance (SSR) conditions. SSR causes system instability and an increase in oscillations. To address these issues, this study aims to develop a damping model in the rotor-side converter (RSC). The proposed model for the DFIG is designed based on the d–q axis inner current control loop. Using the damping model developed in the RSC, SSR conditions under different series compensation levels and varying wind speeds are investigated. The results show that the damping model developed based on the d–q axis inner current control loop provides effective performance in terms of stability enhancement and oscillation damping under different operating conditions.
