Abstract

Recently, a new institutional change highlighting the complementary and synergic effects of digitalisation and sustainability on the economy has begun to be called “the twin transformation”. However, the twin transformation process brings with it a number of new opportunities, as well as some economic and social challenges. In this sense, if the transition process is not managed well, some businesses and sectors in the goods market may become more vulnerable, and social inequalities in the labour market may deepen further. It is therefore essential to develop just transition policies and strategies aimed at disadvantaged groups—particularly older workers who struggle to adapt to new technologies—during the twin transition process. In this context, this study aims to examine whether reverse mentoring would be a viable fair transition strategy for mitigating the negative effects of the twin (digital and green) transition on older workers, using data collected from interviews with 8 young and 10 older workers at Koleksiyon Mobilya AŞ’s Tekirdağ factory. The results indicate that reverse mentoring practices can be a good practice facilitating the just transition of older workers towards the twin transformation. In this process, integrating reverse mentoring practices into just transition strategies and action plans can significantly reduce social inequalities which arise from technological adaptation challenges.
