Abstract

Assessing the impacts of climate change and global warming is crucial for sustainable development. Determining the carbon footprint, which guides the reduction of these impacts and disadvantages, is a critical indicator for sustainable development. In this study, greenhouse gas emissions originating from Türkiye's natural gas consumption for 2024 were examined under seven main sectors in line with the sustainable development goals: conversion, energy, transportation, industry, service, residential and agriculture-livestock. The sectors in question were also divided into subcategories and analyses were carried out on a monthly basis. Structural and periodic factors affecting emissions for each sector were evaluated in detail; the increase and decrease curves of greenhouse gas emissions were analyzed. As a result of the calculations, it was calculated that a total of 111,833,685.94 tons CO2eq greenhouse gas emissions occurred due to natural gas consumption in Türkiye. Sectoral analysis identified the highest emissions originating from the residential, conversion, and industrial sectors, while service, energy, transportation, and agriculture-livestock contributed comparatively less. Natural gas related emissions accounted for approximately 18.7% of Türkiye’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The results unequivocally demonstrate that defining sector-specific priorities is crucial for formulating successful mitigation policies and strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
