Abstract

In this study, the effects of different heat treatment conditions applied to Selective Laser Melting (SLM)-produced Inconel 718 alloy on microstructure, surface roughness, dimensional accuracy, and geometric tolerances were experimentally investigated. Specimens with nominal dimensions of 22 × 22 × 55 mm were fabricated; one was kept in the as-built condition, while the others were subjected to heat treatments at 980 °C for 1.5 h, 800 °C for 1 h, 800 °C for 4 h, and 800 °C for 32 h. Microstructural analyses showed that heat treatments reduced melt pool traces and produced a more homogeneous structure. Surface roughness measurements indicated an average value of 12.946 µm for the as-built specimen, whereas roughness decreased under all heat treatment conditions. The lowest value, 8.465 µm, was obtained after aging at 800 °C for 32 h, corresponding to a 34.61% improvement. In terms of dimensional accuracy, the smallest deviations were observed in the as-built specimen. However, under the 800 °C–32 h condition, maximum deviations of up to 0.86% were detected in certain dimensions. Parallelism tolerances increased after prolonged aging, while the lowest perpendicularity deviation was achieved at 980°C -1,5 h. These findings indicate that long-term aging improves surface quality but may adversely affect certain dimensional and geometric characteristics.
