Abstract

The increasing population in urban areas, coupled with unplanned construction and environmental problems, necessitates a reassessment of green spaces in terms of both quantity and functionality. This study evaluates the feasibility and ecosystem-based contributions of urban agroforestry systems implemented within and around cities. Urban agroforestry offers multiple benefits, including food production, carbon sequestration, climate regulation, soil improvement, support for biodiversity, and social cohesion. Based on a layered vegetation design, these systems integrate trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, ground covers, and edible species, providing both aesthetic and functional gains. Moreover, by fostering social interaction, offering educational benefits, and contributing to climate change mitigation, such systems represent a valuable model for sustainable urban development. In Türkiye, planning urban green spaces in accordance with agroforestry principles could enhance food security, environmental resilience, and social well-being. Challenges encountered in practice include limited space, planning deficiencies, and low levels of public awareness. Urban agroforestry stands out as a promising nature-based solution for sustainable cities, and the aforementioned barriers can be overcome through well-designed, participatory, and multi-functional projects.
