Abstract
Since forests in Türkiye are state-owned, activities carried out in forest areas are subject to legal regulations. This situation necessitates that forest engineers possess legal knowledge and that forest engineering education be structured accordingly. This study examines the forest engineering undergraduate and graduate programs at 12 forest faculties in Türkiye in terms of law courses. Within this scope, the classification of compulsory and elective courses, weekly course hours, ECTS values, semesters in which the courses are offered, the academic titles of the instructors and their affiliated departments, as well as the weekly course content of Forestry Law and applied law courses were evaluated. The results show that undergraduate-level law courses are generally concentrated in the third to fifth semesters, are mostly theoretical in scope, and have a limited ECTS load of 2-3 hours per week. It has been determined that law courses are conducted by the Departments of Forestry Economics, Forestry Law, and Forestry Policy, while some universities lack a Department of Law. Law courses in graduate programs are predominantly offered at the master’s level and vary across universities. In conclusion, while law courses are well established in forestry faculties in Türkiye, there is room for improvement in areas such as course diversity, emphasis on practical application, credit load, and the lack of a Department of Law. With these improvements, it is anticipated that graduates’ legal knowledge will increase, thereby contributing to the quality of public service.
