Abstract

The stresses experienced in the professions can be caused by the profession or the organization, as well as by environmental factors that are an external effect. One of the environmental factors that expose vocational stress today is the COVID-19 epidemic that has spread all over the world. The aim of this study is to reveal the impact of the COVID-19 virus, which is an external stress factor, on accounting professionals and the sources that cause stress in the professional context. Research methodology adopted in this study is a qualitative approach that used depth-interviews as a research tool. In the context of the research findings, the reasons for the stress caused by the pandemic in the accounting profession include factors such as the disruption of the classical accounting profession and changes in the way of doing business, increasing work intensity and workload, professional uncertainties due to legislative changes, document contact and the risk of contamination of the virus. In the interviews, accounting professionals shared the stress caused by COVID-19 and the ways of cognitive and behavioral struggle. However, it is one of the results of the research that accounting professionals do not see the professional value and prestige they deserve despite their difficulties.
