Abstract

This study investigates the impact of voluntary sustainability reporting on financial indicators of manufacturing firms listed on Borsa Istanbul over the period 2016–2023, employing text mining techniques and panel data analysis. The sample comprises sustainability and annual reports of 152 companies (8 years), corresponding to 1,216 firm-year observations. First, the reports were qualitatively examined through a keyword-based content analysis grounded in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, assessing the depth of disclosure across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimensions. Subsequently, panel regression models were estimated using four financial performance measures: return on assets, financial distress, leverage ratio, and gross profit margin. The findings indicate that more in-depth sustainability disclosures may have small but statistically significant effects on firms’ financial performance.
