Abstract
Aim: In this study, it was planned to determine the level of clinical stress on the first day and the factors affecting it in nursing students who started surgical clinical practice in the second year. Methods: The sample of this cross-sectional study consisted of 158 second-year nursing students studying at the nursing faculty of a state university. The data were collected between 19 February and 11 March 2024 using the "Descriptive Characteristics Form", "Other Factors Affecting Clinical Stress Level Form" and "Pagana Clinical Stress Scale (PCSS)". Descriptive statistics and t-test were used in data analysis. Results: In the study, second-year nursing students' PCSQ score was 28.61±12.83. It was found that the factors affecting the clinical stress level of the students most were lack of information (71.5%) and instructor (73.4%). Among the factors affecting the clinical stress level of the students, the instructor factor was found to affect the harm sub-dimension; the nurse factor was found to affect the threat and harm sub-dimensions and the total score of the PCSQ (p<0.05). The physician factor affected the benefit sub-dimension; the patient factor affected the harm sub-dimension; and the lack of information affected the threat and harm sub-dimensions and the total score of the PCSQ (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the study, it was found that the factors of nurse and lack of information affected the clinical stress level of nursing students who went to surgical nursing clinical practice. It was determined that the most common sources of stress among the students were lack of information, instructor, nurse, patient and patient relatives. In order to reduce the level of clinical stress in nursing students undergoing surgical nursing clinical practice, it may be recommended to eliminate the lack of information before clinical practice and to inform the instructor, nurse, patient and patient relatives with relevant trainings.
