Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine concepts of health, illness, and healing in the Atharva Veda, one of Hinduism’s sacred texts, and to reveal the relationship between religious belief and folkloric medicine. It analyzes how medical practices in the Atharva Veda acquire meaning within a magical, ritual, and cosmological framework beyond mere treatment. The central problem is how cosmological explanations of disease origins are linked to folkloric medical practices within a religious worldview. It questions how healing practices reproduce social order and the sacred-profane distinction. Method: This study employs a qualitative, text-centered approach. Selected sections of the Atharva Veda, especially magical-religious formulas, healing prayers, and herbal healing rituals, are analyzed. Textual analysis uses theological hermeneutics and folkloric interpretation, and its relation to Hindu medical tradition is evaluated from a History of Religions perspective. Findings: The analysis shows that in the Atharva Veda health and illness are conceived not merely as bodily conditions but as matters of cosmic and spiritual balance. Plants, formulas, and rituals function as mediators of power and social cohesion. Conclusion: The Atharva Veda shows that in Hindu thought religion and medicine are not separate fields but complementary aspects of a single cosmic order. Folkloric medicine is therefore an applied expression of religious worldview. The study demonstrates that medical rituals in contemporary Hindu culture trace their historical roots to the Atharva Veda, which remains a fundamental source for understanding religious and folkloric continuity.
