Abstract

Objective: This study examines the bīmāristāns (hospitals) operating during the Bahri Mamluk period (1250–1382) in terms of both the healthcare services provided to patients and the social work activities carried out within these institutions. Materials and Methods: The social service practices conducted in the hospitals of the period were analyzed using the works of historians from the Mamluk era, waqfiyya (endowment deeds) listed in Table 1, and relevant secondary literature. In light of the collected data, the historical significance of these hospitals was evaluated analytically within the framework of the social work discipline. Findings: The healthcare institutions that emerged in the medieval Islamic world, including the Bahri Mamluk period, not only provided medical treatment but also contributed to social welfare through charitable services such as free accommodation, medicine provision, food supply, and personal care. Conclusion: The employment of physicians specialized in various fields—such as internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, gynecology, and mental and spiritual health—demonstrates the multidimensional nature of the services provided. Moreover, alternative therapeutic methods, including music performances and storytelling, were used to offer moral and psychological support. Providing discharged patients with a certain amount of allowance represented a form of social assistance aimed at preventing them from engaging in strenuous labor during recovery. On the other hand, the hospitals’ assumption of funeral services for deceased patients reflected their institutional sense of social responsibility. The fact that disadvantaged groups such as the poor, the orphaned, the elderly, refugees, and prisoners could benefit from all these services free of charge presents concrete evidence of how the concept of social justice functioned through institutional structures in Mamluk society.
