Abstract

Introduction: The view of nurses from different generations towards their profession and each other are a crucial factor in the development of nursing profession and the creation of a positive working environment. However, there are limited studies in the literature that have determined the views of nurses from different generations. Aim: This study was conducted to explore the views of nurses from different generations about their profession and each other. Method: This qualitative study was conducted between January 01- October 15, 2024, using semi-structured interviews with 23 nurses selected using the snowball sampling method. Thematic analysis with an inductive approach was used in data analysis. Results: In the thematic analysis, two main themes (Things We Cannot Change, Touch of Time) and six subthemes emerged. In this study, it was determined that the participants stated that their invisibility contributed to their negative professional image, and that they experienced ambivalent feelings towards nursing. Furthermore, it was determined that after starting the profession, Generation Y nurses' views became, while Generation X nurses were more likely to love their profession. Generation X and Z nurses held negative views towards their colleagues from other generations. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that nurses' statements regarding professional development should be analyzed in depth to ensure a positive working environment. Team collaboration and a learning environment from different generations should be provided to tackle intergenerational differences, and further research aimed at exploring generational differences should be conducted.
