Abstract

Purpose: Doctors’ perceptions of and experiences with artistic activities are closely related to the quality of their professional practice, psychological well-being, and forms of social interaction. This study aims to examine how art is understood by physicians not only as an individual pursuit but also as a holistic element that contributes to stress management, the development of empathy, and the transformation of the quality of the working environment. Method: The research was conducted using a mixed-methods design that combines quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected from 240 doctors working in different provinces of Türkiye through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, and arithmetic mean) were used in the analysis of quantitative data, and the findings were interpreted by integrating them with themes derived from the qualitative data. Findings: Quantitative analyses indicate that doctors’ attitudes toward engaging in artistic activities are at a high level and that art is associated with positive contributions, particularly in stress management, empathetic communication, and professional motivation. Qualitative findings suggest that art is perceived by physicians as a means of psychological balance, a space for mental relief, and a mechanism for preventing burnout. In addition, evaluations emphasizing that artistic arrangements in healthcare institutions have the potential to improve the emotional atmosphere of the working environment and to support interaction among colleagues have come to the fore. Conclusion: The findings suggest that artistic activities are associated with doctors’ individual well-being and contribute to considering medical practice on a more humane, empathetic, and sustainable basis. In this context, it is considered that arrangements facilitating access to art in healthcare institutions and practices encouraging artistic participation may be supportive in terms of physicians’ quality of life and the quality of healthcare services.
