Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to compare early patient-reported recovery after bichectomy performed for aesthetic and functional indications using the Quality of Recovery-40 (QoR-40) questionnaire. Materials and Methods: Prospectively collected clinical data were analyzed retrospectively. The study included 50 patients who underwent bilateral bichectomy using a standard intraoral technique at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, between August 2018 and February 2019. Patients were divided into aesthetic (n=27) and functional (n=23) indication groups. Functional indications were defined as chronic cheek biting, discomfort during mastication, or soft-tissue interference. Postoperative recovery was assessed within the first 24 hours using the QoR-40. Data were analyzed with non-parametric methods, and effect sizes were calculated for significant differences. Results: The QoR-40 demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.918). Emotional state, physical comfort, and psychological support subdomain scores were higher in the functional group than in the aesthetic group (p<0.05). No significant between-group differences were found in physical independence or pain. The total QoR-40 score was also higher in the functional group (p=0.011). Correlations among the subdomains indicated that the physical and psychosocial components of early recovery were interrelated. Conclusion: Within the first 24 hours after bichectomy, some QoR-40 dimensions of patient-reported recovery differed between the aesthetic and functional indication groups. However, because potential confounders were not controlled, these differences should not be interpreted as an independent effect of surgical indication. Larger prospective, controlled studies with long-term follow-up are needed to confirm these findings.

Özet

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, estetik ve fonksiyonel endikasyonlarla gerçekleştirilen bişektomi sonrası erken hasta bildirimli iyileşmenin Quality of Recovery-40 (QoR-40) ölçeğiyle karşılaştırılması amaçlandı.
