Abstract

The Beijing Olympics Committee (BOCOG) in their planning phase specified some environmental guidelines with the goal of creating “a green Olympics” for the 2008 Summer games. These objectives support the ecological criteria of environmental sustainability. Thanks in part to this foresight it was selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the games. After obtaining the Olympic bid Beijing made an effort to follow and enact many of these environmental guidelines. In this study, the successes of the Beijing’s efforts have been analyzed in light of the environmental guidelines adopted. An environmental assessment report on the 2008 games was prepared by Greenpeace and the UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) and forms the basis of this research.. In conclusion, Beijing was able to achieve progresses in many areas such as the state—of—the—art energy saving technologies, new infrastructure systems and recycling. It did not, however, take advantages of Olympic Games to promote environmental awareness among the general public and neglected to forrnulate new policies in areas such as forest protection and con— servation of water resources.
