Abstract
It is thought that financial leverage has a serious effect on the market values of companies. The aim of this study is to measure the leverage effect on the market values of technology companies in the IT sector and to test the validity of the Moligdiani-Miller (1963) theory, which is one of the optimum capital structure theories. For this purpose, panel data analysis was performed on the data of companies in the IT sector traded on Borsa Istanbul for the 11-year period between 2013 and 2023. In the analysis, market value was used as the dependent variable, financial leverage ratio was used to represent the debt level of companies as the independent variable, and the natural logarithm of the asset size variable was used as the control variable. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the leverage ratio, which is the independent variable of the study, has a statistically significant and negative effect on the market value. It was concluded that financial leverage has an effect on the market value of companies, but it is not infinite and unlimited as the proposition in the Moligdiani-Miller (1963) theory, and this effect continues up to a certain debt ratio like the financial leverage effect and then turns negative.
