Abstract

Thermal decomposition kinetics of pyrite in carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide + steam environments has been investigated. For this propose, an electrically heated horizontal tube furnace was used. The effects of gas flow rate, reaction temperature, time and gas composition on decomposition rate of spherical pyrite particles, which were placed in the furnace in sample holder as evenly spread with single layer, were determined. The extend of reaction was measured after each experiment by chemical analysis of solid residue obtained. The decomposition reaction is well represented by the ‘‘shrinking core’’ model and can be divided into two region with different rate controlling step.
