Abstract

On Ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian images, large vessels seem to be carried by means of a rope or a net, in spite of smaller bottle-shaped vessels, which were carried in the hand. Bottle-shaped vessels from the second half of the third millennium B.C. are called "syrian flasks" according to their intensivity in Northern Syria. Such vessels are supposed to be used for salve or parfume and seem ta be exported to Anatolia and Mesopotamia. On the surface of a bottle from Gre Virike at the Karkemish dam, traces of a net is visible, which proves, that such vessels were also carried in a net.
