Abstract

The huge amounts of sludges originate from different sources such as wastewater treatment plants of municipalities and industries. The ‘sludge’ is one of the wastes that have to be treated by various methods. The water content of the sludge increases required areas of storage and makes the processing difficult. Also, pathogenic contents of some sludges hinder their handling and their usage for various purposes. Dewatering characteristics of sludges are improved by conditioning methods. The major sludge conditioning methods include thermal conditioning, chemical conditioning and freeze-thaw. A hygienically safe and also dewatered sludge is obtained by thermal conditioning.
