Abstract

In this study, the economic benefits of insulation of pipes buried into the ground in district heating pipelines were investigated. The life cycle cost (LCC) analysis was used for pipe insulation optimization. In analysis, coal, natural gas, fuel-oil and geothermal energy fuels and various diameters of steel pipes for Afyonkarahisar province were taken into consideration. The extruded polystyrene (XPS) such as insulation material was used. Thus, optimum insulation thickness, energy saving and payback periods were determined for various cases. Furthermore, these values were compared for pipes which was buried into the ground and passed from gallery. As a result, the insulation in same thickness and energy saving in a large diameter pipes were found. In district heating pipelines, the pipes buried into the ground instead of passing it to the gallery is more advantageous.
