Abstract

The cement industry, one of the most energy-intensive sectors, is responsible for greenhouse gas emissions that cannot be overlooked. These emissions primarily arise from the decarbonation of limestone during clinker production and the combustion of fuels. Therefore, the development of innovative products enabling reduced carbon emissions has become a critical objective. Among boron minerals, colemanite stands out as a promising alternative raw material due to its chemical composition being compatible with cement production. Previous studies have also reported positive results from the use of boron-based minerals in cement manufacturing. One of the most notable advantages identified is the potential of colemanite to reduce the clinker burning temperature from approximately 1450°C to around 1350°C. In addition to enabling production at lower temperatures, colemanite is also known to enhance the performance of cement. In this study, the optimum amount of colemanite was determined through laboratory-scale investigations. So, a novel laboratory-scale multiple production methodology was applied, allowing the evaluation of cement and concrete performance. Following the laboratory-scale studies, industrial-scale production was carried out at Limak Cement Balıkesir Plant, where additional mineral was used to further improve performance. As a result, an innovative and environmentally friendly cement, Boron Activated Cement (BAC), was successfully produced by incorporating colemanite into the raw meal, achieving a reduction of approximately 10% in carbon emission values.
