Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop a machine learning–based classification model to guide high school students toward appropriate faculties based on their vocational personality profiles, Big Five personality traits, and demographic characteristics. The model was trained using data obtained from university students with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Since these students have already selected a bachelor’s program and achieved a certain level of academic success, they were considered a suitable group for predicting potential vocational orientations at the high school level. The study sample consisted of 877 university students (502 female, 375 male) enrolled in different faculties during the 2024–2025 academic year and selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Big Five Personality Scale, and the Vocational Personality Types Inventory, resulting in 51 attributes. Using WEKA 3.9.5, Random Forest, SMO (SVM), Naive Bayes, J48, and IBk (k-NN) algorithms were applied and compared. The findings showed that Random Forest achieved the best performance, with an accuracy of 87.6% and an F1 score of 0.867. Feature importance analysis indicated that family characteristics, academic background, and vocational personality types were the most influential factors. These results support the development of AI-based student guidance systems and data-driven career counseling applications.
