Abstract

The challenges of global warming, environmental pollution, the depletion of fossil fuel reserves and volatile fossil fuel prices, all of which stem from the use of fossil fuels, have prompted governments worldwide to develop environmental policies that promote environmentally friendly, sustainable renewable electricity sources. Furthermore, interest in environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative energy sources is steadily increasing . This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential for generating electricity from biomass and various types of waste in Türkiye. It examines the growing importance of biomass energy among renewable energy sources within the context of sustainable energy supply and waste management policies. Data for the study were obtained from the Biomass Potential Energy Atlas (BEPA), the Energy Markets Operating Company (EPİAŞ) and the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK). For the analyses, the Marmara Region was selected as the reference region, taking into account socio-economic activity intensity, industrialisation level, and population distribution. Within this scope, the Marmara Region's share of Türkiye's total biomass- and waste-based electricity generation potential was calculated based on waste type (municipal solid waste, agricultural waste, animal waste and forest waste). The results show that many of the region's existing facilities are operating below their technical capacity, indicating considerable untapped potential in waste-based electricity generation. According to the findings, Istanbul province stands out significantly in terms of both installed capacity (201,878 MW) and theoretical electricity generation potential (2,501,563 MWh/year). Bursa ranks second with a production potential of 871,857 MWh/year, while Bilecik has the lowest potential, at 119,460 MWh/year. Based on installed capacity, Kocaeli has the highest capacity utilisation factor at 70.7%, compared to actual production.
