Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of different nitrogen doses on the development period and mortality rate of the Japanese bayberry whitefly, Parabemisia myricae (Kuwana) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), an important pest of citrus crops. The experiments were carried out on sour orange seedlings treated with 20% ammonium nitrate at doses 0 (Control), 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, and 2 g doses of under laboratory conditions of 25 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% relative humidity, and a 16:8 (L:D) photoperiod. The results indicated that nitrogen doses did not produce a statistically significant effect on the total pre-adult development periods of P. myricae. However, the shortest total development time was recorded at the 1.25 g nitrogen dose (24.9 days), while the longest was observed at the 1.75 g dose (29.9 days). Examination of mortality rates revealed a non-linear response to nitrogen application; mortality increased up to the 1.5 g dose but declined at higher nitrogen levels. These findings suggest that the effect of nitrogen on P. myricae is not directly, but rather occurs indirectly through changes in the quality of the host plant sap.
