Abstract

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) is one of scales commonly used in intellectual assessment in our country for many years. There hasn’t been any research aimed at testing construct validity of this scale after its norm study was conducted in 1995. The aim of this study is to test construct validity of the scale by performing confirmatory factor analysis for WISC-R scores of children who has intellectually normal development. The sample of the research consisted of 932 children whose General Intelligence Quantity (IQ) ranged between 80-120. In the research, WISC-R’s IQ’s and scores of 10 main subtests were used. In the research, mean age of the children is 10.97 ± 2.78 and General IQ is 101.93 ± 9.88. One-factor model (g factor) and two-factor model (verbal and performance) was tested and it was found that fit index values of two-factor model [χ2 (32, N = 932) = 132.05, χ2 /sd = 4.12, GFI = .97, AGFI = .95, CFI = .88, RMSEA = .05] was better than one-factor model [χ2 (33, N = 932) = 141.10, χ2 /sd = 4.27, GFI = .97, AGFI = .95, CFI = .86, RMSEA = .06]. The research findings suggested that the two-factor model existed in structure of the WISC-R presented by Wechsler was supported in this sample. Given WISC-R is commonly used in both clinical and educational fields; it is considered that two-factor model can give more useful information about individuals with normal intellectual development than one-factor model.
