Abstract

Climatic parameters change over time, and these changes are regarded as significant differences when they cross certain thresholds. In Turkey, the temperature increases despite differences in the seasonal variations, and increasing trends are seen in rainfall in the north and decreases in the south. In this study, the trends in the Thornthwaite climate indices in Turkey were examined between the years 1971 and 2010, and regression analysis was used for determining trends. T-tests were applied for the hypothesis test of the regression coefficient. Thornthwaite climate indices are created with multiple parameters since trends in these indices allow us to see the trend in several variables within the same frame. As a result of trend analyses, during the period studied, the annual moisture index (AMI) is increasing in the Black Sea coasts while decreasing trends are found in other regions. The annual potential evapotranspiration index (APE) has increasing trends thorough out Turkey. The aridity index (AI) has positive trends in northeast Anatolia and the Black Sea coasts, while decreasing trends are found in other parts of Turkey. Decreasing trends in the moisture index (MI) are found in the south of Turkey, though it increases in the north. According to the seasonal thermal efficiency index (TEI) trends, it was determined that the maritime conditions are weakening in the coasts of Turkey while become stronger in the Eastern Anatolian region and its surroundings.
