Abstract

Violence against women is an extremely prevalent problem in Turkey and all over the world. Shelters are one of the important solutions created against this problem. It is necessary to study women who are victims of intimate partner violence in order to evaluate the quality of shelter services and improve their standards to meet the needs of women. This study analyzed demographic features and socioeconomic status of shelter-residing victims of intimate partner violence (N = 79) using a self-report questionnaire. Cluster analysis showed there were two main clusters: physical and verbal violence victim and multiple types of violence victim (physical, verbal, psychological, economic and sexual violence). Results of a binary logistic regression analysis showed that being a sexual violence victim during childhood increased the odds of being the target of multiple types of violence (as opposed to being a physical and verbal violence victim) by eight times. These findings reveal the importance of transgenerational and longitudinal implementations as well as cross-sectional ones in order to overcome violence against women.
