Abstract

Any marriage that is carried out before the age of eighteen, before the child is physically, physiologically and psychologically ready to bear the responsibilities of marriage and having children. Child marriages, which are very common in developing countries, continue to be an important problem in Turkey. Aim of the present study is to point out the prevelance, causes and most importantly the psychological outcomes of child marriages. Early married girls confront with many physical and psychological problems. They expose to physical and sexual abuse and are not allowed to express their opinions on many issues that concern them. This situation reinforces the unequal position of women in society and imprisons women in the cycle of neglect and abuse.
